We're still here over Christmas!

As the end of another year approaches we'd like to thank you for being a part of the UQ Sport community in some way or another in 2010. It's been an exciting year of progress and achievement and we greatly appreciate your continued support.

It may be holiday time at UQ but don't be fooled - UQ Sport is alive and well over the summer break! Not only are we in the middle of our summer Social Sport competitions and Lifestyle short courses but our venues are also kicking on over the holidays. The UQ Sport & Fitness Centre, UQ Aquatic Centre and UQ Tennis Centre will be open for use on all days except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Please note that the holiday opening hours are different to normal so please be sure to check your venue's opening hours online. The UQ Athletics Centre is also on track to reopen at the end of the year following its closure for resurfacing. On behalf of the team at UQ Sport, have a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season.

2XU and UQ Sport in 2011

Being a not-for-profit organisation, UQ Sport is thankful for the generous support of its sponsors. One of these fantastic sponsors we'd like to acknowledge is the 2XU Performance Centre , South Bank. We’re excited to announce that our partnership with 2XU is set to be even bigger and better in 2011. Located at 179 Grey Street, South Bank, the centre offers the full collection of 2XU products, including running, cycling, triathlon, compression, and a fantastic women’s fitness range.

Owned and operated by Bill and Lou Abram, the store offers personalised service for every customer - from the weekend warrior doing their first triathlon to the seasoned athlete competing at an elite level. 2XU philosophy is simple – they use and source the best possible fabrics to produce the quality garments they are known for.

When athletes put on the technologically advanced 2XU sportswear, they also put on a desire: to be more than they have ever been; to perform beyond expectation. These values are central to the everyday operations of UQ Sport and we look forward to performing beyond expectation alongside 2XU in the future. UQ Sport thanks the 2XU Performance Centre for their ongoing support and looks forward to building on this exciting relationship in 2011.

Athletics Centre makeover 'on track'

As you may have noticed, the UQ Athletics Centre's beloved track is currently being resurfaced. Despite the recent wet weather, the Sports Technology International team are on track to complete the makeover by the target date of 30 December - providing it doesn't rain continuously for the rest of the month!

The crew began by washing the track, removing the top layer, and identifying and repairing any defects such as bubbles or high wear areas. They then raised any low-lying areas that were causing puddles after heavy rain. The next step was to lay the new surface, which was made extremely difficult by the constant wet weather. However to the credit of the STI team, they managed to complete the new surface on schedule by laying one small area at a time between spells of rain.

The finishing touch will be the surveying and marking of new lines on the track, after which the track will once again be in pristine condition and ready for use. The regular athletes of the UQ Athletics Centre are eagerly awaiting an opportunity to get back on track and give the new surface a test run. UQ Sport would like to thank customers for their patience during this process and we look forward to providing you with a flawless facility in 2011.
